Objective: Music education is considered the means to enhance children’s development. Several studies have shown the positive effects of instrumental training on proprioceptive joint
position sense. However, kinesthesia, another critical aspect of proprioception, has received little research attention. Given its importance on perceptual-motor development, the effects
of instrumental training on school-age children’s kinesthetic performance were investigated. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 27 typically developing children aged 9 to 13 with over three years of regular bowed-string instrument training were enrolled (bowed-string group). Twenty-seven age-matched children with no experience in music training were also recruited as the control group. The kinesthesia was assessed through a tablet-based point-matching task, where participants had to touch their perceived target point using a finger or a stylus with their eyes closed. Participants were encouraged to replicate the target position as perfect as possible. Better efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of response during the task indicated the better kinesthesia. Group differences in the kinesthesia indicators across touching modes (finger vs. stylus) were analyzed using the two-way repeated measures analysis of variance with a significance level of .05. Results: No interaction was observed among all the kinesthesia indicators. Efficiency measurements demonstrated no group differences. While accuracy measurements revealed that the bowed-string players replicated target positions more precisely and featured less undershoot in the anterior-posterior direction (p ≤ .014). Consistency measurements also showed superior positional consistency in the bowed-string group (p ≤ .015). Additionally, the touching modes also influenced kinesthetic performance (p ≤ .005). Specifically, while the stylus-touching yielded accuracy comparable to finger- touching, it led to longer movement time with inward deviation, implying the perceptual load of tool-use. Conclusion: Through the tablet-based point-matching task, this study revealed the generally better kinesthesia in school-aged bow-string players. It might suggest that long-term instrumental training benefits the perceptual-motor function in school-aged children.
