Introduction: Care Café is an important place for older adults to improve or maintain their functional performance. Coffee brewing courses designed by occupational therapists can provide therapeutic activities that support the maintenance of occupational performance. However, empirical research on the effects of coffee brewing courses in this population is limited. Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of a six-week coffee brewing course intervention on the daily life function, cognitive function, and hand function of older adults in day care centers. The study also aimed to identify significant factors that may affect the completion of coffee brewing by older adults in day care centers. Methods: This study used a single-group pre-test design to recruit eligible participants from a day care center. The intervention course was conducted once per week for 60 minutes over a period of six weeks. Participants were assessed using the coffee brewing rating scale, the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale, the Barthel Index, the Contextual Memory Test, Trail Making Test, Short Portable Mental State Questionnaire, Nine-Hole Peg Test, and Geriatric Depression Scale before and after the intervention. Results: Sixteen participants (average age: 82 years) completed the study. The meta- memory scores (p = .001), total recall scores (p = .01), and total strategy use scores (p = .002) on the Contextual Memory Test, and the Nine-Hole Peg Test score (p = .003) showed statistically significant improvement. Logistic regression analysis found no significant factors influencing the ability of older adults to brew coffee. Conclusion: Participating in a six-week coffee brewing course intervention resulted in significant improvements in meta-memory, total recall, total strategy use, and hand function among older adults in day care centers. However, none of the variables examined were found to have a significant impact on the ability of older adults to brew coffee.
