Journal of Taiwan Occupational Therapy Research and Practice
Objective: Participation is a fundamental human right of every child. The ability and opportunity of self-expression enable children to participate in decisions. Children can express their own opinions with appropriate tools and supports. “Picture My Participation (PMP)” is a picture-supported interview to assess child-perceived participation in 22 family, school and community activities, and to report their important activities and related environmental factors. As participation and environmental factors are culturally-specific, the objective of this qualitative study was to perform cross-cultural adaption of the PMP-Chinese version (PMP-C), in order to use in school age children in Taiwan. Methods: Cognitive interviews were conducted with five children 6-13 years old with special needs and typical development, and their parents to examine the conceptual, item, semantic, and operational equivalence of the pre-final version of PMP-C. Results: Children and parents in general consider this instrument appropriate to enable children’s expression of life experiences and their thoughts. Though children and parents were able to understand the concepts measured in this instrument, the items and operational procedures needed modifications to fit our culture. Further examination of psychometric properties will be needed to establish cross-cultural validation using the modified version. Conclusion: The PMP-C will provide a practically useful instrument of child-perceived participation. Professionals can use all this information information to provide environmental supports that enable children’s participation in meaningful activities.
